God’s Ultimate Work of Art

Let me begin with a disclaimer. I am not a Biblical scholar. I am not a Constitutional scholar. I am a citizen of the United States of America and a believer in Jesus Christ. Through the power of God’s Holy Spirit I have the ability to read scripture and use the words to understand myself, the world around me and my role in God’s plan. This post must be understood in that context. For some it will ring true, for others it will not. And that is fine. I pray that each person who reads this will have an understanding or dig deeper if this touches their heart in any way.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27

God spent five of the six days of creation preparing our home. He provided all that humanity would need to live a perfect life in connection with him, their creator. The last thing God did before resting was create the male and female in his image. Obviously this is not a physical image because God is spirit not flesh. That comes much later. He created them. Not one before the other. One is not greater than or lesser than; they are simply different. Different yet equal.

This is how I view humanity today – different yet equal. I believe we are all created by God thus we are all equal in his sight. We are obviously different; we have different skin colors, different abilities, strengths, weaknesses, passions, personalities, and desires. This is good. This should be celebrated as an amazing gift. But what does being equal really mean? Does it mean equal in experience? Equal in outcome? Or equal in opportunity and expected dignity?

I view people as individual works of art created by a loving God. Each comes to this earth with a set of gifts and talents that, if used wisely, will profit all humanity. Each has a purpose for being here. “Planned” or “unplanned” all are here by the grace of God. We must respect what God has created.

The Declaration of Independence clearly states the inalienable rights include life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and these rights come not from man but from God our Creator. Our problem, and the source of strife, violence and pain today, is that God has been cast aside replaced by the ‘wisdom’ of humanity. Like Adam and Eve much of the humanity has replaced the wisdom of God for their own knowledge. We are watching a godless society fighting for power and control. So many of these activists (not all…please do not add or take away from what I am writing) remind me of out of control toddlers living without boundaries. They are crying out for structure, discipline and guidance. My fear is that they will turn to government – more people – to provide those boundaries. We all feel safer with defined boundaries and expectations. I choose to turn to God for those things. I want my government to keep me safe from enemies foreign and domestic, establish and uphold justice for all, and ensure the general welfare of the citizens. Then leave me alone to pursue happiness.

I feel a very strong desire to speak to the founding of our nation and what has made it great. Not perfect, but different and great. As we approach Independence Day I will be praying for God’s grace to flow into the hearts and minds of His children and that a mighty and holy voice will rise to bring an end to the violence and begin a nonpartisan dialogue. That, my friends, is only possible through the grace of God. Won’t you please join me in this prayer?

Until Monday…..
